The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is becoming increasingly relevant for the construction sector. During a thematic session organised by Hibin, suppliers, industry organisations and data specialists came together to discuss the practical impact of the DPP. Peter Veldhuizen gave a practical demonstration on behalf of ZeeBoer.

The meeting made clear that the DPP goes far beyond new legislation alone. It affects product information, data structures, collaboration throughout the supply chain and the way manufacturers and suppliers manage and share their information.

European legislation is impacting construction practice

During the session, Eduard Beekhuizen of Ketenstandaard explained the developments surrounding European legislation such as the ESPR and the revision of the CPR. Within these regulations, the DPP will become an important instrument for transparency, sustainability and product traceability.

For construction suppliers, this means that product information will need to be digitally available, structured and continuously up to date. Not only technical performance will matter, but also information about origin, circularity, maintenance and reuse. In that sense, the DPP complements existing documents such as the Declaration of Performance (DoP).

Standards such as ETIM, DICO and STABU2 will also play an important role. Ketenstandaard is actively involved in the further development and alignment of these standards within the Dutch construction sector.

BMI demonstrates the practical challenges

An important part of the afternoon was the practical case presented by BMI Group. Wim Hunting showed that the sector is still very much in transition. Manufacturers often already possess large amounts of product information, but that data is frequently spread across different systems, documents and departments.

The discussion also highlighted that transparency can create tension in practice. What information should be shared? Which data is commercially sensitive? And how should manufacturers deal with formulations, supplier information and changing product specifications?

This clearly demonstrated that the DPP is not just an IT issue. It also affects processes, responsibilities and collaboration within organisations.

The need to centrally manage product information, for example through a PIM system, was repeatedly emphasised during the session.

ZeeBoer demonstrates an AI-demo on DPP in practice

On behalf of ZeeBoer, Peter Veldhuizen gave a live AI-demonstration showing an example of DPP tooling. The demo illustrated how digital product information may help the construction supply chain access information more efficiently in the future.

At the same time, the discussion openly acknowledged that the sector is still evolving. Data quality, completeness and standardisation remain essential conditions before AI and automation can become fully reliable.

That is precisely why centrally managed and well-structured product information is becoming increasingly important. With Utopis, ZeeBoer helps construction suppliers centrally manage product data and connect to standards such as ETIM, DICO, STABU2 and RAW.
